Music Class
April Highlights
When we came back from Spring Break, we started an instrument petting zoo. I provided opportunities for students to explore how to play various instruments from the families of the orchestra. We started out playing instruments from the brass family. Then moved to the woodwind family and we will finish with the string family. We already did work in the percussion family back in October. During this month, we had the KSO symphony orchestra's string quintet perform for us, as well as the Delton Kellogg HS band. This was a very instrument filled month.
April also has Earth week and Arbor day. My mother set up a fund with the Barry Community Foundation to yearly provide a white pine to all Delton Kellogg elementary students in honor of Arbor day. These trees were distributed as part of the Earth Week activities.

March Highlights
The 4th graders have been working hard on their recorder karate belts, there are now 10 who have received their black belt. The other students have been looking at lives of various composers. That ended with the watching of Sergei Prokofiev's "Peter and the Wolf." It is setting us up for an instrument petting zoo in April.
February Highlights
Recorder Karate is now up and running for the 4th grade. Kindergarten, First and Second graders were in full swing as they did a little square dancing. The third grade is concentrating on reading rhythms. We are also taking a look at the life of some great musical composers and sharing a little on Black History month.
January Highlights January was supposed to be the month I got the 4th graders started on recorders but I was sick for a good chunk of it. There were also quite a few "snow days". So now I am playing catch up and trying to get all of the classes in the same place so Recorder Karate can start.
December Highlights
Well, the Winter Assembly is now history. The Assembly was comprised of grade level songs, group songs and 4th grade talent. It was performed to a packed house and looked like it was well received.
Some 3rd and 4th graders ended out performing twice that week, for the superintendant of the district asked if I could put together a performance for the School Board meeting. It went off without too many problems with 35 students in attendance. Not too bad for a short notice performance.

November Highlights
On November 8, there was a combined HS choir and band concert for the Veterans of the community. All buildings were invited to attend. Many elementary classes provided support for the veterans in attendance by creating artwork and participating at the assembly.
Native American Heritage month
In celebration of this month, I brought in my tipi. It is a Souix replica that I purchased about 20 years ago from a person retiring from Civil War reinactments. The students had a brief history and geography lesson, worked a little with the percussion family, performed an ostinato, danced Native American style, and went inside for a story or legend.
October Highlights
The elementary had the opportunity to watch the Delton Kellogg Marching Band perform their half time show. It featured 2 Drum Majors, 4 flag corp members and songs that children might enjoy.
Exploring the percussion family
Students had a chance to sort a variety of percussion instruments into groups based upon how they made sounds. Shake it, scrape (rub) it, or stike (tap) it!
Looking forward to what will happen in November with the percussion family. Just wait!
